How many toys, what type of toys, how many computer games, how many special trips, how much T.V., or how many new toys does one child need? All of these questions seem to be constant on every parent’s mind today that I needed to recount my cardboard box.
You see, when I was a kid, I didn’t have all these new toys that parents are told today that they need by all those advertisers. In fact, my parents probably couldn’t have afforded them anyway because it was expensive enough looking after four children. Now, don’t get me wrong. We always had plenty to eat, always had clean clothes, although some were hand me downs, and we were always attended to by a doctor when it was needed.
Summer is here — that wonderful season when we take our kids on trips to enjoy nature and some relaxed family time together. Of course, whether it is the cottage, a camp site, or a resort, we have to get there first and that’s not always easy. Whether driving in the car, waiting for a bus, or waiting at the airport, having something to do with the kids can be a lifesaver! What our family loves to do is to play games. I have assembled here some of our favorite games. The first two are car games, but the rest can work anywhere. Enjoy!
Omega 3’s are ‘good fats’. Omegas are not stored by the body as excess fat, they are absorbed and utilised by the body in a number of extremely beneficial ways. Omega 3 fatty acids are important for brain function and research has showed that they may play an important role in vision, co-ordination, learning ability, memory, concentration and behaviour. When our mothers told us that fish was ‘brain food’, she wasn’t kidding! Omega 3 fatty acids cannot be produced by the body so we must obtain them through diet.
There are several parents who live in the fear of whether their child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Unlike many other disorders and other problems, ADHD can be one which bears both psychological and social impacts on virtually everyone who has anything to do with the child. ADHD, acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurological syndrome, mostly found in young children aged below 7 years. ADHD can be characterized by forgetfulness, hyperactivity, mood swings, distractibility, and poor impulse control. ADHD can effect on both children and adults and as many as 5 to 8% of all children are victims of this psychological disorder. It is estimated that many children with ADHD go undiagnosed each year.
When it’s time to get your kids to bed, do you find it is always a chore or a battle of wills? It doesn’t have to be that way, anymore. The choice is yours. And the best news is, creativity isn’t needed, only common sense and a desire for your child to get a good night’s sleep.
Now, you can say “Good night.” and mean it. As parents, we have to wear many hats. We’re super heroes, doctors, playmates, confidants and in this case, the sand man. But when it’s time to put your kids down for the night, the key is to make them willing participants.
